Nigeria Police Force Condemns Jungle Justice: Upholding the Rule of Law and Human Rights

The Nigeria Police Force has once again taken a firm stance against the disturbing trend of jungle justice, emphasizing its harmful impact on the nation's justice system.

The Nigeria Police Force has once again denounced the practice of jungle justice, emphasizing its detrimental effects on the country's justice system. In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on the force’s official platform, it was highlighted that jungle justice undermines the effective administration of justice and poses a significant obstacle to the smooth dispensation of justice in Nigeria.

The statement clarified that jungle justice, defined as the act of taking the law into one's own hands, has been universally condemned for various reasons, particularly for impeding the strengthening of the criminal justice system. It cited a recent incident reported to police operatives at the Itire Divisional Police Headquarters in Lagos State, where a group of hoodlums vandalized a man's vehicle. Despite the arrest of one of the vandals, the situation escalated when the vandal was handed over to a security guard named Agunbiade Adekunle, who subsequently killed and set him ablaze.

Adejobi affirmed that the security guard has been apprehended and will face charges of murder. The statement underscored that such incidents of jungle justice across the country have hindered investigations and prosecutions, thus undermining the smooth functioning of the justice system.

Furthermore, the Nigeria Police Force condemned jungle justice and urged the public to refrain from engaging in mob actions or extrajudicial killings. It emphasized that jungle justice constitutes a criminal act and a grave violation of human rights, posing a threat to the foundations of a civilized society. Such practices perpetuate violence, prejudice, and lawlessness, eroding the authority of legitimate institutions and weakening the rule of law.

The statement reiterated that jungle justice has no place in a civilized society, as it fosters fear, injustice, and a cycle of violence. Instead, communities are urged to reject vigilantism and uphold the rule of law, ensuring that justice is served through fair and transparent legal processes. By doing so, the principles of democracy, human rights, and equality for all can be upheld and preserved.
