Nasarawa Governor Advocates for State Police and Revenue Formula Review

Nasarawa State governor, Abdullahi Sule, has underscored the importance of addressing funding concerns before the adoption of state police in Nigeria.

Nasarawa State governor, Abdullahi Sule, has emphasized that once state police is adopted in the country, his colleagues would push for a review of the current revenue allocation formula. Speaking as a guest on Channels Television's "Sunday Politics" programme, Sule highlighted funding as a critical issue for governors in advocating for the implementation of state police.

He addressed concerns regarding the recent deaths of two students from Nasarawa State University during a palliative distribution stampede, asserting that negligence or poor planning by the government was not the cause. Drawing on his experiences at Indiana University, where there was a dedicated police force, Sule expressed support for state police but voiced apprehensions about its funding implications.

Sule outlined potential challenges, stating that after the adoption of state police, governors might request a revision of the revenue sharing formula. He emphasized the importance of sustainability, particularly with the continued presence of federal security agencies alongside state police.

Regarding Nasarawa State's stance on state police, Sule clarified that the state was still consulting with stakeholders and had yet to submit a memorandum to the National Economic Council (NEC). He explained that the delay was not indicative of opposition but rather a need for thorough consultation.

Earlier in February, President Bola Tinubu and governors from all 36 states had reached a consensus on the need for state police to address escalating security challenges. Subsequently, 16 governors submitted reports to the NEC in support of state police creation and constitutional amendment, while the remaining 20 governors' positions were pending.

While state police has garnered both criticism and support, Sule reiterated concerns about funding and the potential implications for state finances. He emphasized the necessity of addressing these challenges before moving forward with the implementation of state police.
