ELON MUSK CONSIDERS MONTHLY FEE TO COMBAT BOTS ON X PLATFORM

Elon Musk, the owner of online platform X, has proposed the introduction of a monthly fee for all users as a measure to combat the issue of bots on the platform.

Elon Musk, the owner of online platform X (formerly known as Twitter), has suggested the introduction of a monthly fee for all users in order to combat the issue of bots on the platform. Musk, who took over X in October last year for $44 billion, has been implementing various changes, including firing employees, introducing a paid premium option, reducing content moderation, and reinstating previously banned accounts, including that of former US president Donald Trump. These changes have been met with mixed reactions.

In July, Musk revealed that X had experienced a significant decline in advertising revenue. Bots, which are computer program-operated accounts, are prevalent on X and can be used to artificially amplify political messages or spread racial hatred. During a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk addressed the issue of online anti-Semitism and the use of bots to replicate and amplify it.

Musk proposed that implementing a small monthly payment for the use of X could be an effective way to combat the proliferation of bots. By introducing a fee, even a few dollars, the cost of using bots would become significantly higher, making it less attractive for individuals to employ them. Additionally, the need for a new payment method for each new bot would further deter their use.

The conversation between Musk and Netanyahu was broadcast on X. It took place amidst a dispute between Musk and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a US-based Jewish organization. Musk has accused the ADL of baseless accusations of anti-Semitism, which he claims have scared away advertisers and negatively impacted his company's revenue. He has even threatened to sue the ADL for billions of dollars. The situation remains contentious and unresolved.
