Arewa Movement for Good Governance Raises Alarm Over National Assembly Failures

The Arewa Movement for Good Governance (AM2G) has raised alarm over perceived governance deficiencies within the National Assembly, casting doubts on the state of democracy in Nigeria.

A group known as the Arewa Movement for Good Governance (AM2G) has voiced concerns over perceived governance failures, particularly within the National Assembly, suggesting a state of crisis in Nigeria's democracy. Usman Bugaje, the Convener of AM2G, expressed these worries during a press conference held in Kaduna on Thursday. Bugaje quoted Edward Snowden, highlighting the notion that exposing crimes is often treated as a criminal act, implying that Nigeria is being governed by individuals with questionable integrity.

Bugaje drew attention to recent events in the National Assembly, including the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi and the removal of Senator Kawu Sumaila from his PRO position within the Northern Senators Forum. These occurrences, according to Bugaje, signify a disturbing trend indicating a compromised National Assembly and a deteriorating Nigerian state, prompting concerns about the nation's future.

The former member of the House of Representatives emphasized the constitutional obligation of both the executive and legislative branches to ensure the security and welfare of Nigerian citizens. He lamented the failure of the state to fulfill this mandate, coupled with attempts to suppress public discourse. Bugaje criticized the control of microphones during Senate sessions, which he viewed as an attempt to silence dissent and evade accountability, particularly regarding issues such as alleged budget padding.

Bugaje further highlighted the adverse effects of these governance challenges on ordinary Nigerians, who bear the brunt of economic hardship and marginalization. He underscored the urgency for Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability from their leaders amidst the prevailing existential crisis facing the nation. The Arewa Movement for Good Governance (AM2G) urged citizens to raise their voices and actively participate in holding their leaders accountable for their actions.
