NCC Restores 90% of Voice and Data Services Post-Undersea Cable Disruptions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced significant progress in restoring voice and data services, with 90 percent functionality achieved following disruptions caused by undersea cable cuts.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported that voice and data services have been restored to 90 percent of functionality following disruptions caused by undersea cable cuts. This update was conveyed in a statement signed by Ruben Muoka, the Director of Public Relations at the NCC, on Monday.

On March 14, both banking services and telecommunications networks experienced disruptions due to the cuts in subsea cables. Providing a progress report on the repair efforts, Muoka stated that 90 percent of the network has now been restored, with ongoing efforts aimed at returning operations to normalcy.

Muoka explained, “Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities.”

He further added, “All operators impacted by the cuts have implemented recovery capacity from submarine cables unaffected by the cuts, resulting in approximately 90% recovery of their peak utilization capacities.”

Additionally, Muoka highlighted that Mobile Network Operators have assured the Commission that data and voice services would operate optimally while awaiting full repairs of the undersea cables. Alternative connectivities have been activated to bring the situation back to normal.

The NCC expressed gratitude to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts. This acknowledgement reflects the Commission's recognition of the challenges faced by consumers and their cooperation during the restoration process.
