Anambra State UBEC Contract Scam: Chairperson Denies Involvement Amidst ICPC Probe

The Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Associate Prof. Vera Nwadinobi, has denied involvement in an alleged N6.7 billion UBEC contract scam currently under investigation by the ICPC.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Associate Prof. Vera Nwadinobi, has refuted any involvement in an alleged N6.7 billion UBEC contract scam that is currently under investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Reports circulating on social media platforms claim that the funds, purportedly meant for UBEC projects in Anambra from 2019 to 2021, were misappropriated.

In response to the allegations, Nwadinobi dismissed them as false and fabricated, attributing them to individuals who oppose the "disruptive change" occurring in Anambra. The reports allege that the funds were shared among the ASUBEB chairman, government officials, and their associates.

Investigations revealed that the UBEC contracts during the specified period were awarded to individuals who did not participate in the technical bidding process of the board. A source within ASUBEB confirmed that officials implicated in the alleged scam have been summoned by the ICPC to clarify their involvement.

Furthermore, it was reported that a new Procurement head was appointed at ASUBEB to facilitate the scheme. This individual allegedly signed contract award letters for projects they did not supervise, and which were not part of the procurement process they oversaw.

Documents from ASUBEB's office indicated that 12 companies were awarded contracts without participating in the bidding process, while 50 other companies that failed to qualify were also awarded projects.

When contacted for clarification, Nwadinobi dismissed the claims as fabricated lies, attributing them to individuals resistant to the governor's efforts to improve Anambra and combat corruption.

The ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, declined to provide details on the ongoing investigation when initially contacted. Upon a follow-up inquiry, Ogugua reiterated the agency's policy of non-disclosure during ongoing investigations.
