Niger Turns to Nigeria for Fuel Amidst Diplomatic Tensions

Niger has turned to Nigeria for assistance in addressing its severe fuel shortages, despite ongoing diplomatic tensions, with a delegation of high-ranking officials visiting Abuja to secure 300 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Niger has turned to Nigeria for assistance in addressing its severe fuel shortages, despite months of diplomatic tensions and hostile rhetoric between the two countries. A delegation of high-ranking officials from Niger's military junta recently visited Abuja to discuss the issue with federal government representatives.

Following these deliberations, an official source confirmed that 300 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) were approved for delivery to Niger. According to a senior government official familiar with the situation, Nigeria agreed to provide this fuel as part of a strategic bargaining tool in ongoing negotiations with Niger.

The delegation explained that Niger had previously relied on fuel from a Chinese refinery. However, due to operational issues and supply disruptions, the refinery was forced to shut down, leaving the country with limited options for securing the necessary fuel supplies.

Local correspondents reported that the decision to seek Nigerian assistance came when the fuel shortage situation became critical for Niger's operations. Despite these pressing needs, details of the arrangement are reportedly kept confidential by both sides. The official stated, "We do not want to blow our trumpet. Rather, we want to use this opportunity discreetly to help our neighbors while also advancing our own interests."

This move highlights the complexities in international relations and demonstrates how practical needs can sometimes override diplomatic tensions.
