DISTURBING INCIDENT: MOTHER ALLEGEDLY POISONS DAUGHTER IN LAGOS

In Lagos State, Rukayat is in police custody for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter due to frustration with the child's epilepsy. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the arrest, highlighting the urgency of mental health awareness in such distressing situations.

A woman, identified as Rukayat, is currently in police custody in Lagos State for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter with an insecticide in the Oworonshoki area. The distressing incident took place around 11 am on a Friday. According to a police source, the infant had epilepsy, and Rukayat, the mother, resorted to poisoning her due to her overwhelming frustration with the challenging circumstances.

The grim details unfolded when Rukayat brought her one-year-old, seven-month-old daughter to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for treatment. Shockingly, on the same day, she confessed to poisoning her child with an insecticide, citing her inability to cope with the stress of raising a child with epilepsy. The source revealed that Rukayat expressed a desperate desire to "rest from the stress" she faced in dealing with her daughter's medical condition.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that the mother has been arrested, and an ongoing investigation is in progress. Detectives from the division were promptly dispatched to the hospital, where they found the baby undergoing treatment. Rukayat was taken into custody after her child received medical attention, and the authorities are actively looking into the distressing circumstances surrounding the poisoning.

This tragic incident echoes a similar case from the previous year, where the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the death of a 39-year-old woman named Lilian Nwarache. She resorted to drinking an insecticide in the Iwaya area of Lagos State, reportedly driven by frustration stemming from a debilitating illness. These heart-wrenching events underscore the need for mental health awareness and support for individuals grappling with challenging circumstances.
