MOSOP CALLS ON PRESIDENT TINUBU TO DRIVE OGONI DEVELOPMENT

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the development of the Ogoni kingdom. This appeal is aimed at addressing the longstanding issues of oil pollution and neglect of Ogoni people.

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), a socio-cultural organization representing the Ogoni ethnic group, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate actions for the development of the Ogoni kingdom. This appeal is seen as a deliberate measure to address the long-standing issues of oil pollution and neglect that have afflicted the Ogoni people.

Fegalo Nsuke, President of MOSOP, expressed the necessity of this call to alleviate the suffering of the Ogoni people. MOSOP has been actively working to address the problems caused by Shell's reckless business practices over 65 years. Nsuke emphasized the need for the government to demonstrate practical support for MOSOP's efforts to find sustainable solutions, primarily through the implementation of MOSOP's proposed development plan.

MOSOP's proposals aim to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced by the Ogoni people. They seek government backing for these initiatives to rebuild trust and confidence while reversing the adverse impact of Shell's operations. Nsuke urged President Tinubu to prioritize the resolution of the Ogoni problem by considering MOSOP's development proposal, which promises benefits for both the government and oil companies, along with job creation, stability, and improved living conditions for the Ogoni and Nigerian people.

Nsuke warned that Ogoni was at high risk of severe social disorder if the existing unemployment crisis remained unaddressed. He called on the government to collaborate with MOSOP's efforts to tackle these pressing issues, emphasizing that the government should not remain silent when viable solutions are available.

He further pointed out the deteriorating living conditions in Ogoni, characterized by a lack of electricity, high unemployment rates, and numerous small business closures. Nsuke stressed that immediate intervention was essential, and President Tinubu should consider MOSOP's development proposals to initiate economic activities and attract investments to alleviate social problems.

MOSOP's Central Committee had approved a development plan in September 2020 to resolve the long-standing conflict between the Ogoni people, the government, and the oil industry. This plan, known as the Ogoni Development Plan, is regarded as a viable pathway to address disputes and promote the development of the Ogoni region.
