House of Representatives Advances Bill to Amend Flag and Coats of Arms Act

The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards amending the Flag and Coats of Arms Act in Nigeria, with the aim of regulating the display and use of national flags.

The House of Representatives has passed a bill for a second reading aimed at amending the Flag and Coats of Arms Act, Cap. F30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, concerning the regulation, display, and use of national flags. Sponsored by Honorable Sada Soli, the bill was approved during a plenary session held on Wednesday in Abuja.

In his presentation, Honorable Soli urged fellow lawmakers to support the bill, outlining its key provisions. The proposed amendments are divided into four sections, with Section 8 seeking to introduce a new organization, such as a Civil Defence Corps officer or any paramilitary organization, empowered to seize or remove flags. Additionally, Section 10 of the bill aims to increase the fines for offenses related to flag abuse or misuse, raising the penalty from one hundred naira to one hundred thousand naira.

Addressing his colleagues, Honorable Soli emphasized the necessity of curbing the excessive abuse of the national flag, which is perpetrated by both individuals and public or corporate organizations. He stressed the importance of implementing stricter regulations to preserve the dignity and significance of the national flag, citing the need for the proposed amendments to achieve this objective.

The bill underwent its first reading on Thursday, November 23, 2023, marking the initial step in the legislative process towards enacting amendments to the Flag and Coats of Arms Act.
