Political Intrigue in Ondo State: Betty Akeredolu's Verbal Spat and its Implications

A political feud has erupted in Ondo State, involving Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the widow of the late governor, and Funke Akeredolu Aruna, her late husband's niece.

The late governor of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, found herself in a verbal spat with her late husband's niece, Funke Akeredolu Aruna, over Aruna's support for the governorship ambition of Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the current sitting governor. The All Progressive Congress (APC), the ruling party in the state, has scheduled its primary election for the following month.

Betty Akeredolu publicly criticized her late husband's niece, Aruna, through her viral Instagram account. She accused Aruna of disloyalty and shamelessly supporting Aiyedatiwa's gubernatorial aspirations, referring to her as a "bloody serpent" and suggesting that time would reveal her true intentions.

However, Betty's online post sparked widespread reactions, with many expressing dismay that she was engaging in such exchanges instead of focusing on mourning her husband's passing and maintaining decorum.

In response to Betty's accusations, Aruna clarified that her support for Aiyedatiwa's reelection bid stemmed from her role as an assistant convener of the Orimisan Lucky Aiyedatiwa women's support group in Ondo State. She dismissed the photo circulating as a political ploy by opposition forces to tarnish her reputation and stated her continued allegiance to Aiyedatiwa.

A prominent lawyer in the state, Allen Sowore, criticized Betty Akeredolu's actions, particularly her overt endorsement of Wale Akinterinwa as the preferred successor to her late husband. Sowore highlighted Betty's apparent disregard for the significant resources allocated to her husband's health care and funeral expenses, as well as her inclination to acknowledge external figures like Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over local dignitaries.

Sowore also questioned Betty's sincerity in mourning her late husband, suggesting that her involvement in political conflicts and power struggles contradicted traditional expectations of widowhood. He criticized her for taking swipes at her late husband's former aides in her written tribute and accused her of prioritizing political interests over genuine grief.

Overall, the public exchange between Betty Akeredolu and Funke Akeredolu Aruna, along with the commentary from Allen Sowore, underscored the complexities of political dynamics within Ondo State and raised questions about the appropriate conduct for individuals involved in governance and public life.
