CLEEN FOUNDATION TO TRANSLATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT (ACJA) INTO YORUBA FOR GRASSROOTS ACCESS

Mr. Gad Peter, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, has unveiled plans to translate the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) into Yoruba, aiming to make the legal provisions more accessible to Yoruba-speaking communities and grassroots audiences across Nigeria.

Mr. Gad Peter, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, has revealed plans to translate the provisions of the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) into Yoruba. This translation initiative aims to ensure that the ACJA's innovative provisions are accessible to Yoruba-speaking communities and grassroots audiences across Nigeria. The decision to undertake this project was inspired by the successful translation of the ACJA into Hausa by civil society observatories in Jigawa State.

Represented by Mrs. Chigozirim Okoro, the Programme Officer, Mr. Gad Peter disclosed this during a two-day seminar held in Ilorin, Kwara State. The primary goal of this translation project is to promote the effective implementation of the ACJA's provisions in Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole, ensuring compliance by duty bearers.

Mr. Peter acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the project's focus on finding solutions. He expressed optimism that Kwara would emerge as a leading state in the implementation of the ACJA, citing the translation of the act into Yoruba as a pioneering effort. The Yoruba version of the ACJA will serve as a valuable tool to engage and educate local communities, helping to bridge the gap in awareness and understanding of the justice system's innovations.

Highlighting the importance of awareness, Mr. Peter noted that, based on their experience in Kwara, the current level of awareness is rated at 4 out of 10. He emphasized that true changes will become noticeable once the implementation of the ACJA begins, leading to improvements in the criminal justice system, reduced overcrowding in detention centers, and enhanced conduct by judges and lawyers in court proceedings.

In summary, CLEEN Foundation's translation project aims to make the ACJA accessible to Yoruba-speaking communities, improve awareness, and drive effective implementation of the act's provisions, ultimately contributing to positive changes in the criminal justice system.
