Atiba Ruling House Asserts Claim to Alaafin Throne Amid Legal Challenges

Descendants of the Atiba Ruling House in Oyo State, Nigeria, have reiterated their claim to the vacant throne of the Alaafin of Oyo.

Descendants of the Atiba Ruling House in Oyo, Oyo State, reiterated their claim to the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo on Friday, cautioning the government against individuals falsely identifying themselves as members of the ruling house. The vacancy arose following the passing of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, at the age of 83 in 2022. Currently, there are two pending cases related to the selection of the new monarch in different courts within the state.

One of the cases involves the Basorun of Oyo town and four other High Chiefs, who have filed a lawsuit against the state governor, Seyi Makinde, the Attorney General of the state, Oyewole Oyewo, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Segun Olayiwola. Additionally, descendants of the Atiba Ruling House are contesting their exclusion from the throne through a separate lawsuit in the same court.

In a statement issued by Atiba descendants in Ibadan, the state capital, concerns were raised about individuals falsely claiming affiliation with the ruling house in an attempt to usurp their rights. Mohammed Adediran-Atiba, the current Head of the ruling house, clarified that their patriarch, Abiodun Atiba, had three surviving children whose descendants are legitimate members of the family, namely Isikilu Adedeji, Tella Makanjuola, and Asiru Sanda.

Adediran-Atiba emphasized the lineage's legitimacy and continuity, tracing their ancestry back to previous rulers of the Alaafin dynasty. He outlined the succession of family heads, highlighting the limited number of Mogajis (family heads) throughout history. Adediran-Atiba underscored the importance of upholding the lineage's integrity and urged the state government and the Chairman of Atiba Local Government to thwart the efforts of impostors posing as members of the ruling house.

In conclusion, the descendants of the Atiba Ruling House reaffirmed their rightful claim to the Alaafin throne and called for vigilance against fraudulent attempts to undermine their heritage and succession traditions.
