Tragic Stabbing Incident at Nigerian Universities: Police Response and Investigation

The Imo State Police Command recently reported a tragic incident involving the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old final year student, Chinagorom Marvellous Kingsley, from FUTO, allegedly by a 21-year-old 300-level student of Imo State University named Francis Marvellous.

The Imo State Police Command reported on Friday that a tragic incident occurred wherein a 22-year-old final year student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), named Chinagorom Marvellous Kingsley, was fatally stabbed by a 21-year-old 300-level student of the Imo State University (IMSU) named Francis Marvellous. The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident to journalists in Owerri, stating that the altercation between Chinagorom and Francis escalated to the point where Francis used a knife to fatally stab Chinagorom.

Contrary to circulating rumors, the police dismissed the notion that Chinagorom was stabbed to death by a Hausa Fulani individual. Instead, they asserted that the incident stemmed from a heated argument between the two students. The Commissioner of Police has directed the deputy commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to oversee the case and ensure the apprehension of the suspects involved, as well as those spreading false information, to face legal consequences.

According to police reports, Francis Marvellous, the alleged perpetrator, was swiftly apprehended by police operatives in response to a distress call from the Chief Security Officer of FUTO, retired DSP Patrick Egwu. The suspect was nearly lynched by an angry mob at the scene. The body of the victim was recovered and taken to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where he was pronounced dead and deposited at the mortuary.

During interrogation, Francis confessed to the crime, admitting that he engaged in a heated argument with personnel of FUTO's Man O' War Unit, during which he produced a concealed knife and fatally stabbed Chinagorom. Francis also implicated three others who were allegedly present during the altercation: his brother Francis Promise, Prince, and an individual known as Soji.

Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and determine their involvement in the case. The suspects will be arraigned in court following a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. The police have debunked false narratives circulating on social media, cautioning against the spread of misinformation that could incite unnecessary intertribal conflict. The Commissioner of Police emphasized the importance of lawful conduct and urged the public, particularly the staff and students of FUTO, to refrain from taking matters into their own hands as investigations continue.
