ASUU Taraba Chapter Raises Concerns Over Pension Scheme and Salary Delays

The Taraba State University, Jalingo, ASUU chapter has raised significant concerns regarding the welfare of its members to the Taraba state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas. Led by Dr. Garba Joshua, the chapter highlighted the challenges, which is impacting the livelihoods of its members.

The Taraba State University, Jalingo, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has raised concerns with Taraba state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, regarding the uncertain future of its members who are under the state government’s payroll but are not enrolled in any pension scheme. ASUU expressed worry that this insecurity is gradually affecting its members and may lead to the loss of top talents to other institutions if not addressed.

Dr. Garba Joshua, Chairperson of Taraba Varsity ASUU, addressed the media in Jalingo, the state capital, highlighting the absence of a pension scheme, non-payment of earned academic allowances since 2014, and the backlog of salaries as significant concerns for the union members. He emphasized the urgent need for action, particularly concerning the welfare of the families of deceased members who are left without financial security due to the lack of a pension scheme.

Dr. Joshua stressed that the absence of a pension scheme not only fails to provide long-term security for members but also undermines their stability and confidence in the future. This situation, he argued, could adversely affect morale, productivity, and overall satisfaction within the organization. He advocated for the implementation of a robust pension scheme to ensure the well-being of members and sustainable growth for TSU in the long run.

The ASUU chapter also highlighted the excruciating hardships faced by its members due to the prolonged delay in receiving withheld salaries. Dr. Joshua emphasized that as inflation rates rise and the cost of living increases, the purchasing power of their salaries diminishes, exacerbating their financial struggles and distress. The union urged the state government to urgently address this issue and expedite the payment of salary arrears.

Additionally, Dr. Joshua called for prompt payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), stressing their importance in the remuneration package for academic staff. He expressed concern that the non-payment of these allowances since 2014 has caused financial hardship and discontent among members. The ASUU chapter urged the government to take decisive action to address this pressing issue and prioritize the welfare of its members.

Finally, Dr. Joshua called on the state government to address the backlog of promotion arrears and expedite the construction of perimeter fencing around the institution for the overall well-being of its members. He urged the governor to prioritize these pressing issues to ensure the welfare and livelihoods of ASUU members at Taraba State University.
