Ghana Parliament Passes Anti-LGBTQ Bill: Implications and Controversies

The recent approval of the anti-LGBTQ bill by the Ghana Parliament marks a pivotal moment in the country's stance on human sexual rights and family values.

The Ghana Parliament has recently approved the bill addressing human sexual rights and family values, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill. The legislation, officially named the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, was spearheaded by Sam Nartey George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram.

According to GhanaWeb, the bill aims to prohibit LGBTQ activities and criminalize any promotion, advocacy, or funding related to them. Citing Citinewsroom, local media sources have reported that individuals found engaging in such activities could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years. Additionally, individuals who support or promote LGBTQ activities may be sentenced to three to five years in prison.

The approval of this bill marks a significant development in Ghana's approach to LGBTQ rights and has sparked discussions both nationally and internationally. However, further details regarding the implementation and enforcement of the legislation are expected to emerge in due course.
