HMS Trent, a warship from the Royal Navy, has arrived in Lagos, Nigeria for the second time as part of its mission to assist allies and partners in combating illegal activities such as piracy and illicit trafficking. The British High Commission stated that this visit aims to provide capacity training and support maritime security in the region.

The ship, which departed from Gibraltar, is equipped with a team of expert UK Royal Marines and a Puma surveillance drone. The mission of HMS Trent is to assist West African allies in developing their ability to combat crimes at sea and contribute to stability in the wider West Africa region. With approximately £6 billion of UK trade passing through the area, one of Trent's objectives is to promote stability in the Gulf of Guinea by providing training to partner navies, fostering relationships, sharing knowledge, and conducting patrols to enhance security.

Commander Tim Langford, the Commanding Officer of HMS Trent, expressed his team's enthusiasm for working with their Nigerian counterparts and building upon the relationships established during their previous visit to Lagos in 2021. Jonny Baxter, the UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, highlighted the significance of Nigeria as a valued defense partner for the UK in West Africa. Both countries face common threats, and the UK is eager to collaborate with Nigeria to overcome these challenges and enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. This deployment demonstrates the commitment of a truly Global Britain in addressing shared international security concerns.
