UNCERTAINTY LINGERS AS ECOWAS LIFTS SANCTIONS ON NIGER

Nigeriens welcomed the recent lifting of some ECOWAS sanctions imposed after a military coup last year. While celebrating the relief, concerns persist over ongoing security issues, and the fate of imprisoned President Mohamed Bazoum remains uncertain.

Nigeriens expressed relief on Sunday as West Africa's regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), lifted some sanctions imposed on the country after a military coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum last year. The sanctions, including a no-fly zone, border closures, and asset freezes, were implemented in July. Despite ECOWAS' warning of military intervention, there has been little progress in restoring Bazoum, who remains imprisoned in Niamey's presidential palace.

The lifting of some sanctions was welcomed by the people of Niger, where over 40% live in extreme poverty according to the World Bank. The announcement brought optimism, with hopes for a return to normalcy. The upcoming month of Ramadan heightened expectations for a drop in basic commodity prices, allowing both rich and poor to better provide for their families, as expressed by Abdoul Aziz Issoufou in Niamey.

In Tahoua, located in Niger's southwest, the news prompted celebrations marked by car horns and motorbike parades. However, economist Hima Garba highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Niger, including violence and jihadist attacks along its borders. While the lifting of sanctions was met with joy, the Nigerien authorities had not yet commented on the development.

Niger, along with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, all of which experienced coups, had been suspended from ECOWAS. Despite the positive reaction to the eased sanctions, concerns about the persistent security issues in the region remained, indicating that challenges persist even as some restrictions are lifted.
