Tribute to Emeritus Prof. Anezionwu Okoro: A Legacy of Patriotism and Excellence

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently paid tribute to Emeritus Prof. Anezionwu Okoro, a distinguished Nigerian dermatologist and literary icon, during Okoro's funeral in Imo State.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has hailed Emeritus Prof. Anezionwu Okoro, a prominent Nigerian dermatologist and literary figure, as the "most patriotic Nigerian." Obasanjo paid tribute to Okoro at his funeral held at the All Saints’ Anglican Church, Ndi Aniche Uno, Arondizuogu in Imo State. Prof. Okoro, aged 94, passed away on January 20, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to medicine, literature, and education.

 

Described as the first West African and Nigerian dermatologist, Prof. Okoro was renowned for his pioneering efforts in the field of medicine. Additionally, he made notable contributions to literary and educational spheres, leaving a lasting impact on Nigerian society. Obasanjo reminisced about his close friendship with Okoro spanning nearly six decades, highlighting his unwavering patriotism and love for Nigeria.

 

Speaking at the funeral, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of individuals like Okoro in shaping the destiny of Nigeria. He expressed his belief that with more citizens embodying Okoro's values, Nigeria could become a paradise on earth. Eze Ndubuisi Kanu, the chairman of Ideato North Traditional Rulers’ Council, echoed Obasanjo's sentiments, praising Okoro for his peaceful nature and dedication to national development.

 

Mr. Ben Anachebe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, lauded Okoro as one of the finest academics in black Africa. He acknowledged Okoro's significant contributions to his community and the nation at large, celebrating his enduring legacy and impact on countless lives. The funeral ceremony also featured a sermon by Rt. Rev. Bishop Henry Okeke, urging Nigerians to cultivate a strong relationship with God and exercise wisdom in their earthly pursuits.

 

Bishop Okeke emphasized the importance of fearing God and shunning corruption, particularly among Nigerian leaders. He cautioned against the inherent corrupt tendencies of the human heart and urged leaders to prioritize integrity and righteousness in governance. Prof. Okoro's legacy extended beyond his medical and literary achievements; he was also recognized for his advocacy on behalf of individuals with albinism.

 

Among his literary works were translations of Shakespearean works into the Igbo language and novels such as "One Week One Trouble," "Flying Tortoise," and the "Febechi" series. Prof. Okoro's contributions earned him recognition as a life patron of the International Society of Doctors in Literature, solidifying his status as a respected figure in both medical and literary circles.
