Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has clarified a recent incident where two different budgetary proposals for the Nigeria Police Force in 2025 were mistakenly thought to have been presented to the National Assembly. Egbetokun explained that there was no confusion, as two versions of the budget documents were provided, both containing the same figures and facts, but with the abridged version using simpler language for easier comprehension.
Egbetokun provided this clarification in a statement issued on Friday, through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The statement, titled "Budget Presentation: IGP clarifies budget presentation 'drama' at National Assembly, calls for Citizen's cooperation", aimed to address the misunderstanding that had arisen.
The Inspector-General described the incident that occurred during the presentation of the 2025 budget for the Nigeria Police Force to the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as "unfortunate and avoidable." He emphasized that the document he presented was shared with all committee members beforehand, and both versions of the budget documents were provided to the committee members.
According to the statement, at the beginning of the session, the committee members unanimously agreed to allow the IGP to present the abridged version of the budget, as they all had access to both documents. However, Senator Onyekachi Nwoebonyi (Ebonyi North), who arrived late, began referencing the comprehensive version, which led to the confusion.
Egbetokun called for cooperation from Nigerian citizens in such matters, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and understanding in ensuring smooth communication between the police force and the public.
