Labour Unrest and Government Responses: Minimum Wage and Palliatives Distribution Across Nigeria.

Amidst planned demonstrations by organized labor to protest economic hardships and the high cost of living, the police authorities have declared their stance against any form of violence.

The police authorities have declared their stance against any form of violence during the planned two-day demonstration by organized labor to protest the country's hardships and high cost of living. This announcement came as the Nigeria Labour Congress set new conditions ahead of the minimum wage negotiation. In Enugu State, concerns were raised about some pensioners receiving as little as N1,000 or less as monthly pension, with criticism directed at the adjustment of the minimum wage, particularly for local government workers who reportedly received only 25% of the N30,000 added to their salary.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aka Eze, did not respond to a request for reaction when contacted. The Benue State Government stated that the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage began in 2021, but it was initially only applied to workers from grade level 06 downwards. Workers from level 07 and above are yet to benefit from the wage due to rejected proposed consequential adjustments.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman in Benue State, Gideon Akaa, asserted that apart from the grains distributed by the state government in December, no other palliatives had been given to the people. He mentioned that no union leader was involved in the sharing of palliatives and expressed uncertainty about whether the state government had provided any palliatives to the people.

In Katsina State, the state TUC Chairman, Mallam Muntari Ruma, stated that civil servants received a N15,000 special palliative allowance in January, with plans for continued payment until the new Minimum Wage Act is promulgated. He also revealed that the state government had released a revolving loan of N200 million for civil servants, in addition to the N250 million previously released. Furthermore, the government distributed 5,000kg bags of rice and 900 bags of maize, with distribution set to begin that week.

The TUC Chairman in Ogun State, Akeem Lasisi, confirmed that the state's workforce received a 40% pay rise and N10,000 monthly palliatives.
