NUC Plans to Establish More Universities to Enhance Tertiary Education Access in Nigeria

NUC has announced plans to address the significant disparity between the number of candidates seeking admission to universities and the limited admission capacity in Nigeria.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced plans to establish more universities in Nigeria to enhance access to tertiary education. The commission highlighted the significant disparity between the nearly two million candidates seeking admission to universities and the limited admission capacity, which currently stands at only 500,000 to 700,000 students.

During a media interaction in Abuja, NUC's acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, revealed that the approval of two new universities is imminent, which will bring the total number of universities in the country to 272. Maiyaki emphasized the necessity of deliberately expanding the university system to address the challenges faced by families striving to secure university education for their children each admission session. He expressed the tough and demanding nature of this situation for university leaders and the NUC, underscoring the imperative to continue approving new universities.

Maiyaki also drew attention to the fact that countries with smaller populations than Nigeria, such as Brazil and Indonesia, have over 1,000 universities. He indicated that efforts are underway to revitalize the Nigerian university system by facilitating transnational education, allowing foreign universities to establish operations within the country. This move is part of Nigeria's commitment to broadening university access and ensuring the provision of quality education to meet the demands of its populace.
