The Federal Government has criticized the governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for likening Nigeria's economic challenges to those of Venezuela, stating that the governors are merely seeking attention.

In a press release on Tuesday, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information & National Orientation, emphasized that the PDP governors owe Nigerians an explanation for the increased allocations. The statement welcomed their call for a bipartisan approach to addressing the nation's economic and security issues. However, it expressed disappointment in the conduct of the PDP governors, considering their roles as leaders in the country.

The statement highlighted the discrepancy between Nigeria's economic situation and that of Venezuela, asserting that Nigeria's economy remains robust and is expected to achieve a 3% GDP growth this year. It also emphasized the government's ability to meet financial obligations both domestically and internationally, as well as maintain a healthy trade balance with global trading partners.

The government pointed out that since President Tinubu took office, the revenue available to all levels of government has more than doubled, with all 36 states and 774 local governments receiving significantly larger allocations due to economic reforms. The statement urged Nigerians to question the PDP governors about the utilization of the increased revenue to improve the lives of citizens in their respective states.

Furthermore, it criticized the PDP governors for unpaid salaries, pension arrears, and failure to implement the minimum wage, attributing these issues to the economic pressure faced by their citizens. The statement also called on the PDP governors to fulfill their obligations to workers, pensioners, and local contractors, and to support food production in their states.

The government highlighted its efforts to address security challenges and stabilize the exchange rate, urging the PDP governors to collaborate with the Nigerian Governors Forum and the administration to revitalize the economy for the collective well-being of Nigerians.
