Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mohammed Sanusi, recently spoke out against blaming President Bola Tinubu's administration for the country's current economic challenges. Sanusi attributed the nation's economic woes to mismanaged policies over the past eight years. He emphasized this during a virtual address at a religious event in Abuja, stating that he would not join those criticizing Tinubu for the current economic difficulties.

Sanusi highlighted his prior warnings about the impending economic crisis, stressing that the current hardship was a result of unsustainable economic policies. He cautioned that if corrective measures were not promptly implemented, the situation could worsen. Sanusi also defended Tinubu, stating that while he was not free from fault, he should not be solely blamed for the current economic predicament.

Sanusi commended Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidy, asserting that it would be unjust to hold Tinubu's administration responsible for the economic hardship. He pointed out that the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary, as Nigeria could not afford to sustain it. Sanusi also criticized the mismanagement of the economy over the past eight years, citing excessive printing of currency and the adverse impact on the value of the naira.

Following Tinubu's announcement of the fuel subsidy removal in 2023, the country experienced a surge in the cost of living, leading to protests in several states. Citizens expressed their grievances over the increased prices of essential commodities, attributing their hardships to the economic situation. Sanusi urged those who could assist the less privileged to do so, while also advising individuals to live within their means during these challenging times.
