Protests Erupt in Nigeria Over Rising Cost of Living and Fuel Subsidy Removal

The recent surge in protests across Nigeria, particularly in Lagos and several other states, reflects the growing discontent among citizens over the country's rising cost of living.

Nigerians concluded the week with a peaceful protest in Lagos on Saturday, as citizens, including market women, men, and youths, took to the streets in the Ibeju-Lekki area to express their discontent over the country's escalating cost of living. The protesters wielded various placards, with messages directed at the government, voicing their grievances.

During the demonstration in Ibeju-Lekki, the women displayed placards bearing inscriptions such as "Baba Tinubu, Nigerians are hungry" and "Tinubu, come and rescue us," among others. This protest is part of a series of demonstrations that have occurred in Kogi, Osun, Niger, and Kano states in recent days, all in response to the increasing cost of living following the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023.

In light of these events, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Itse Sagay, expressed his views during an interview on Channels Television. Sagay, who previously chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption under former President Mohammed Buhari, highlighted the significant hardship that the abrupt removal of the fuel subsidy in President Bola Tinubu's inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, has caused for Nigerians.
