The Ogun State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for two farm laborers, known only as Danjuma and Victor, in connection with the alleged murder of a commercial motorcyclist, Shola Olarewaju. The incident, which occurred on January 28 in Alago Meji Street, Isara-Remo, Ogun State, is believed to have involved the suspects strangling Olarewaju. After the alleged killing, the suspects reportedly stole his motorcycle and fled the scene.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the suspects were suspected of fleeing the town with Olarewaju’s motorcycle when they were confronted by a member of a local vigilante. A farmer, identified as Sekinah Awosanya, who brought the suspects from Osun State to work on her farm, reported the matter to the police. She stated that Danjuma and Victor, both of northern extraction, had been staying in their second house at Itakete in Isara with Shola Olarewaju, the commercial motorcyclist.

Odutola narrated that a member of the local vigilante stopped the suspects while they were fleeing on Olarewaju’s motorcycle. The suspects initially lied about their destination but eventually abandoned the motorcycle and fled when they arrived at the house.

After efforts to locate Danjuma and Victor failed, Awosanya took the security men to the house where the suspects had been staying and Olarewaju’s body was discovered on the floor. The victim’s hands and legs were tied behind him, and he was suspected to have been strangled by the suspects. Awosanya, who brought the suspects to the town, has been detained for investigation.

The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the completion of the preliminary investigation. Although the motive behind the murder remains unclear, attacks on commercial motorcyclists in Remo communities have been frequent in the past. In a separate incident in 2023, operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun State rescued a commercial motorcyclist, Mohammed Bashiru, and retrieved his motorcycle from a suspected robber in Ode-Remo. The suspect was arrested by the corps and handed over to the police for prosecution after attacking Bashiru and snatching his motorcycle.
