At the most basic level, a ductless air system works similarly to a refrigerator - by moving heat rather than producing it. In heating mode, refrigerant is compressed inside the compressor, raising its temperature. The hot, high-pressure gas is then pumped through air-exposed coils called a condenser where it relinquishes its excess heat to the outside air. The cooled refrigerant liquid then expands suddenly through an expansion valve, absorbing heat from its surroundings in the process. It then circulates through evaporator coils housed in the air handler unit inside the home. As the cool liquid refrigerant circulates through these coils, it absorbs heat from the air blown past them by the system's blower. The circulating refrigerant then returns to the compressor to complete the cycle.
