DELAY IN TRUMP'S TRIAL AS LEGAL ISSUES REMAIN UNRESOLVED

The trial for former U.S. President Donald Trump's alleged attempted election fraud has encountered a delay, as the court in Washington announced the postponement of the trial's original start date of March 4 due to unresolved legal issues in the case. A new date for the trial has not yet been determined.

Trump, who seeks to run again as the Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election, is facing four criminal proceedings on 91 separate charges. One of these cases, in Washington, involves federal-level indictment for his efforts to retroactively overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to his Democrat rival Joe Biden. Trump's refusal to concede defeat led to various attempts to overturn the election result, culminating in the violent attack by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In the indictment related to January 6, Trump faces four formal charges, including conspiracy against the United States, with the potential for a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Trump denies all accusations and views the prosecution as a political maneuver to hinder his potential re-election bid.

Experts note that a conviction would not necessarily bar Trump from running in the November election, especially given the uncertainty of a final judgment by that time. The trial in Washington is one of four that Trump is currently facing, with additional charges brought against him in New York, Miami, and Atlanta.

The delay in the trial was anticipated, as Trump raised a fundamental legal issue regarding whether the office of the president provides immunity from criminal prosecution. An appeals court in Washington is currently deliberating on this matter, with a decision pending on whether Trump can be prosecuted at the federal level or if he is protected by immunity as a former president.
