NIGERIA POLICE FORCE MANDATES UNIFORMED OFFICERS FOR STOP-AND-SEARCH DUTIES

In response to a recent incident involving plainclothes policemen, the Nigeria Police Force has announced new regulations requiring officers conducting stop-and-search duties to be in uniform with their names clearly displayed.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that officers conducting stop-and-search duties must be in uniform with their names clearly displayed. This declaration was made by the Force Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a post on his official handle. The announcement comes in response to a video showing four plainclothes policemen stopping a driver on the Lekki-Epe Express Way.

In the video, the officers, who were not in uniform, approached the driver to request his tinted permit. However, the driver asked for their identities, noting that there was nothing to indicate they were policemen. In response to this incident, Adejobi stated that the officers had been identified and traced to Zone 2, and that the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 2 Lagos is conducting an investigation, with the Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) set to address the matter soon.

Adejobi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force has mandated that any officer involved in routine patrol or stop-and-search operations must be in uniform, properly dressed, and easily identifiable. He stressed that conducting stop-and-search duties in plainclothes is not ideal, as it can lead to unprofessional conduct when officers' identities are concealed.

Furthermore, Adejobi highlighted that plainclothes officers are meant for surveillance or undercover work and should not be visibly armed with long-range guns or rifles. He urged police divisional officers (DPOs) and heads of departments (HODs) to enforce these standards to maintain professionalism and order within the force.
