The military governments in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali have decided to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) immediately. This decision was announced in a statement on Sunday, with the leaders of these Sahel nations stating that it was a "sovereign choice" to leave the organization without any further delay.
These countries have been grappling with jihadist violence and poverty, which has strained their relationships with ECOWAS. The coups that took place in Niger in 2023, Burkina Faso in 2022, and Mali in 2020 have further complicated matters. As a result, all three have been suspended from ECOWAS and faced significant sanctions from the organization.
