The family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria's national flag, has called upon the Federal Government to honor him with a state burial. Akinremi, the eldest son of the late Akinkunmi, emphasized that such recognition would serve as an inspiration to Nigerian youth, promoting values like hard work, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.

Taiwo Akinkunmi was celebrated as a brilliant and intellectual individual from an early age. His exceptional qualities earned him a scholarship to study abroad and brought him recognition throughout his life. His passing left a void in the family that only God could fill.

Despite the loss, Akinremi expressed gratitude for his father's well-lived life, stating that he reached his final destination gracefully. However, the family hopes that the Federal Government will provide a dignified burial in acknowledgment of his contributions.

Additionally, Mr. Olaniran Shofela, a family head and community leader, clarified that Taiwo Akinkunmi was not from Ibadan or Ekiti, as had been speculated. He highlighted Akinkunmi's significant role in Nigerian history, particularly his design of the national flag, which emerged as the best in a corruption-free competition.

Shofela encouraged today's youth to emulate Akinkunmi's life, emphasizing values such as service, hard work, and integrity over the pursuit of money. He noted that Akinkunmi's legacy was one of service, humility, and integrity, traits that earned him admiration during and after his lifetime.

Taiwo Akinkunmi passed away at the age of 87 after a brief illness associated with old age, leaving behind three children. His educational journey began in Ibadan and continued with studies abroad in Agricultural Engineering. It was during his time abroad that he entered a competition to design Nigeria's national flag, a design that would eventually replace the British Union Jack on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained its independence from British colonial rule.
