RISING CONCERNS OVER KIDNAPPINGS IN ONDO STATE: EFFORTS AND CHALLENGES IN COMBATING CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES

Stakeholders across Ondo State have raised concerns about the increasing incidents of kidnappings and other criminal activities in the region.

Stakeholders across Ondo State have raised concerns about the increasing incidents of kidnappings and other criminal activities in the region. Recently, a couple traveling along the Akure/Ikere highway was abducted, while another traveler managed to escape into the bush along the same route. The abductors reportedly stopped the vehicles by shooting sporadically in the air to intimidate other road users.

Prior to this incident, a suspected kidnapper disguised as a scavenger was apprehended in Akure for the abduction of an 8-year-old girl. The suspect allegedly used a charm to abduct the victim and was caught in the act with a wheelbarrow after the girl's cries alerted her grandmother.

Additionally, two suspects linked to the killing of a prominent socialite in the state, Oladoyinbo Adebayo, were arrested after the victim was murdered at a popular hotel and his body abandoned in his vehicle. Despite efforts by police detectives, local hunters, and personnel from the state security outfit known as Amotekun, the perpetrators were not apprehended, and the victims were only released after their families paid a substantial ransom.

The state Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, reported that the security outfit had successfully thwarted three kidnapping attempts within the past month, emphasizing that their collaborative efforts with other state security agencies had contributed to a reduction in criminal activities in the state.
