STAKEHOLDERS Call FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION INTO FAKE UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

The establishment of an investigative panel by the Federal Government to address the issue of fake universities selling credentials to Nigerians has garnered support from key stakeholders in the education sector.

The Federal Government has set up an investigative panel to look into the issue of fake universities selling credentials to Nigerians. This move has been supported by various stakeholders in the education sector, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN). These stakeholders are calling for a thorough investigation that leaves no stone unturned and ensures that anyone found guilty faces maximum sanctions.

ASUU has emphasized the need for maximum sanctions for those involved in the criminal act of promoting fake universities and distributing fake certificates. They also urge the panel members to take their assignment seriously and recognize the importance of redeeming the reputation of higher education.

NANS, on the other hand, stresses the importance of a thorough investigation to protect Nigerian students from the negative impact of patronizing fake universities. They advocate for the exposure and punishment of all promoters and collaborators involved in this fraudulent activity.

Similarly, NAPTAN expresses the hope that the panel's report will be fruitful and lead to the exposure of those involved in promoting fake schools. They also highlight the need for the government to prioritize and improve local institutions to reduce the pressure on students to seek education from fake foreign universities.

The investigative panel, led by Prof. Jibrila Amin, has been given a two-month timeline to complete its assignment. The committee's terms of reference include examining the allegations of degree certificate racketeering, reviewing the role of government officials in facilitating the recognition and procurement of fake certificates, and making recommendations to prevent a recurrence of such issues. Additionally, the panel will review the procedures for granting licenses to new universities and the accreditation of programs to ensure quality assurance in the education sector.
