ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL DOCTORS PREPARE FOR INDEFINITE STRIKE

The Association of Resident Doctors of Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital has announced their decision to initiate an indefinite strike due to critical issues such as doctor shortages, insecurity, and insufficient support for the residency program.

The Association of Resident Doctors of Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital has declared their intention to commence an indefinite strike due to severe shortages of doctors, insecurity, and inadequate support for the residency program. This decision was reached at an emergency general meeting held at the hospital, with the strike scheduled to begin on January 31, 2024, following the expiration of a seven-week grace period after the issuance of their ultimatum to the Enugu State Government.

In a joint communique signed by the President of ARD-ESUT, Dr. Chukwunonso Ofonere, and its Secretary General, Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani, the doctors expressed disappointment at the lack of response from the hospital management and the state government to their demands. They highlighted the failure to address the shortage of doctors and ensure the safety and security of medical personnel within the hospital.

The doctors emphasized the need for urgent recruitment of medical officers, resident doctors, and house officers, particularly in critical departments such as Accident and Emergency, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. They also called for the implementation of safety measures to protect hospital staff from physical attacks and kidnapping, as well as the payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) and salary increments.

Furthermore, the doctors expressed concern over the proposed increase in rent for hospital quarters, which they believe would exacerbate the existing challenges. They warned of an impending indefinite strike if their demands are not met, while also appealing to the state Governor Peter Mbah to intervene in order to prevent potential hardships and loss of lives resulting from a disruption in healthcare delivery.
