GOVERNMENT SEALS MARKETS IN LAGOS OVER WASTE DISPOSAL VIOLATIONS

The Lagos State Government has recently taken decisive action by sealing three major markets in the region—Oke-Afa Market, Isolo Market, and Katangua Market in Abule Egba.

The Lagos State Government has taken action by sealing Oke-Afa Market, Isolo Market, and Katangua Market in Abule Egba due to violations of waste disposal regulations and unhygienic practices. This move is part of the government's ongoing zero tolerance for waste initiative, which aims to address mounting environmental health concerns. Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, emphasized the government's commitment to enforcing this initiative and stated that any market or facility engaging in irresponsible waste disposal would face sanctions.

Mr. Wahab assured residents that the markets would remain closed until stringent hygiene and waste disposal measures were implemented and compliance maintained. He emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring cleanliness throughout the metropolis and stressed the importance of safeguarding public health.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, urged market executives to ensure that their members adhere to waste management regulations, including the use of provided waste bins and the practice of hygienic habits. He warned that the zero tolerance initiative would be pursued more vigorously and that markets failing to embrace proper waste disposal practices would face consequences. Dr. Gbadegesin appealed to market executives to mobilize their members to preserve the environment for the benefit of everyone and emphasized the crucial role of cooperation from all stakeholders, including market operators and traders.

Furthermore, Dr. Gbadegesin reiterated LAWMA's commitment to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment and urged traders and market authorities to adopt responsible waste disposal habits and collaborate with LAWMA to maintain clean and healthy environments. He also encouraged residents to report waste management related issues through LAWMA's toll-free numbers or email address.
