FAAN DEFENDS RELOCATION OF HEADQUARTERS FROM ABUJA TO LAGOS

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has defended the directive to relocate its headquarters from Abuja to Lagos, as issued by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has defended the directive to relocate its headquarters from Abuja to Lagos, as issued by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. In an internal memo dated January 15, 2024, FAAN's Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, instructed the agency's Director of Human Resources and Administration to assess the implications of the relocation order. The memo specifically requested an analysis of the effects of moving the operations of FAAN headquarters to Lagos.

It was reported that as of December 2015, FAAN had a total staff strength of 5,308, with the number divided among technical (representing 21.72%), non-technical (78.26%), and executive staff (0.02%).

In a separate statement, FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, reiterated that the decision to relocate the headquarters was made in the best interest of the authority. Orah explained that those affected by the decision to move the headquarters to Abuja have since returned to Lagos due to the lack of office space for them in Abuja. The statement highlighted the impracticality of moving the headquarters to Abuja when there was no single FAAN building in Abuja capable of accommodating all staff at once.

Orah further stated that the Minister has proposed engaging concessionaires to construct suitable offices for FAAN in both Lagos and Abuja. Until this plan materializes, FAAN will continue to manage its existing building in Lagos, which can accommodate all directors and senior officials. Orah clarified that operational offices in Abuja remain fully functional, with no reduction in operations, emphasizing that the decision was purely technical and does not impact the ongoing operational structure in both cities.
