SEN. KABIRU MARAFA COMMENDS JUDICIARY AND CALLS FOR PEACE IN THE AFTERMATH OF SUPREME COURT RULINGS

Former Zamfara lawmaker, Sen. Kabiru Marafa, expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu's decision not to interfere in the Supreme Court's judgment on the 2023 governorship election.

Former Zamfara lawmaker, Sen. Kabiru Marafa, expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu's decision not to interfere in the Supreme Court's judgment on the 2023 governorship election. Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central at the National Assembly from 2011 to 2019, commended Tinubu and the justices of the apex court for upholding the will of the Nigerian voters. He stated that their actions had safeguarded Nigeria's democracy and prevented a repeat of the 1983 scenario, where the Second Republic collapsed after the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) took over states previously held by the opposition.

Marafa also lauded the justices of the Supreme Court, asserting that they had met the expectations of the Nigerian masses and had earned a place of honor in the country's history. He emphasized his belief in the judiciary's ability to rectify political injustices, citing a previous incident during the buildup to the 2019 general election in Zamfara.

In that instance, Marafa, then a leading contender for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara, protested against the conduct of the primaries and the imposition of candidates by the then Governor Abdulaziz Yari. The judiciary's intervention resulted in a landmark judgment that handed the state to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Marafa stressed the importance of allowing the judiciary to act justly and fairly, regardless of whose interests are affected, for the endurance of democracy in the country.

Furthermore, Marafa urged the eight governors whose elections were affirmed by the Supreme Court to govern their states with magnanimity, justice, and fairness. He congratulated Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and encouraged him to work towards justifying the people's confidence in him. Marafa also called on the governor to collaborate with President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and relevant security agencies to restore peace and security in Zamfara, emphasizing the people's yearning for peace in the state.

The Supreme Court had recently affirmed the election of eight governors, including Abba Yusuf (Kano), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi State), Alex Otti (Abia), and Bassey Otu (Crossover).
