PROFESSOR PAT UTOMI ADVOCATES FOR POLITICAL REFORM AND DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRESS IN NIGERIA

In a recent interview on Channels Television, political economist Professor Pat Utomi discussed the state of Nigerian politics and the need for significant reform.

Political economist Professor Pat Utomi revealed in an interview on Channels Television that the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have agreed to establish a mega party aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Utomi emphasized the need for a fresh start in Nigerian politics, asserting that the country has not had a genuine political party since 1999. He criticized the existing political platforms, describing them as tools for machine politics used to seize power, often for the purpose of state capture. He urged an honest assessment of the impact on the quality of life for Nigerians since 1999, highlighting the country's decline into poverty and widespread violence.

He pointed out that the political class in 1999 formed a coalition to keep the military out and share power but failed to align with the Nigerian people to improve their lives. This failure, according to Utomi, has led to Nigeria's deterioration and its status as the poverty capital of the world, as well as a center of widespread violence.

Utomi drew a comparison between India and Nigeria, noting that India, despite being technically bankrupt in 1991, has since focused on the rational engagement of a developmental state, leading to significant progress. In contrast, Nigeria has regressed, failing to establish structures for political participation that prioritize the well-being of the Nigerian people and uplift their lives.
