CONTROVERSY OVER SLOGAN 'NO GREE FOR ANYBODY' AND LAWYERS' PROTEST AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY

The recent controversy surrounding the use of the slogan "No Gree For Anybody" has sparked a debate between the Nigeria Police and human rights activists and lawyers.

Yesterday, some lawyers criticized the Nigeria Police's warning against the use of the slogan "No Gree For Anybody," which has gained popularity among Nigerians. The Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed concerns that the catchphrase could incite a crisis in the country, citing intelligence reports from the security community. However, human rights activist Femi Falana and former 2nd Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Monday Ubani, disagreed with the Police's stance, asserting that the expression does not constitute a threat to law and order and should not be criminalized.

Falana emphasized that the Police have no authority to ban the use of the expression, while Ubani stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and ensuring peace. Evans Ufeli, the Executive Director of Cadrell Advocacy Centre, also deemed the Police's warning unnecessary, stating that the slogan is a positive expression adopted by youths and millennials to motivate themselves and achieve their goals for the year.

In a separate development, the army urged Nigerians to join forces with security agencies by adopting the slogan "We no go agree for all terrorists in 2024" to demonstrate their solidarity in the fight against criminal elements. The Director of Defence Media Operation, Maj Gen Edward Buba, encouraged Nigerians to report criminal activities and assured them of the military's commitment to taking action.

Additionally, lawyers in Lagos protested against police brutality, specifically citing the unlawful detention of their colleague, Olumide Shonupe, by the DPO of Gowon Estate Station, Ipaja. Femi Falana condemned the police's actions, stating that Nigerian lawyers will no longer tolerate the mistreatment of legal practitioners and other citizens.
