SUPREME COURT TO DELIVER FINAL JUDGMENTS ON SEVEN GOVERNORSHIP APPEALS, INCLUDING KANO AND PLATEAU

The impending judgments by the Supreme Court on seven governorship appeals from various states in Nigeria, including Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Cross River, have drawn significant attention.

On Friday, the Supreme Court is set to deliver judgments on seven governorship appeals from the states of Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Cross River. According to The PUNCH, these decisions will be final, marking the end of legal challenges to the governorship elections in these states.

The judgments on the appeals from Kano and Plateau are particularly awaited, as the lower courts had previously removed the sitting governors of these states. Legal representatives for the parties involved in the appeals from these two states vigorously presented their arguments at the apex court, seeking to persuade the justices in favor of their clients.

In the case of Kano, the tribunal had invalidated the election of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, citing 165,663 invalid votes due to ballot papers that were neither stamped nor signed. The appeal court upheld the tribunal’s decision and criticized the lower court for not disqualifying the governor, stating that he was not properly sponsored by the NNPP, thus violating constitutional provisions. The court declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election. Governor Yusuf is now hoping for a reversal of the lower courts’ decisions by the apex court.

Regarding Plateau, Caleb Mutfwang’s election was initially upheld by the Plateau State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Jos, but the appeal court overturned Mutfwang’s victory and declared Nentawe Goshwe of the APC as the winner. The court ruled that the failure of the PDP to comply with the order of the Plateau State High Court in Jos, directing it to conduct valid ward, local governments, and state congresses before nominating its candidates, constituted a breach of the law. For the same reason, the appeal court also removed several lawmakers elected on the PDP platform in the state.
