YETUNDE ONI APPOINTED CEO OF UNION BANK OF NIGERIA AMID CBN LEADERSHIP CHANGES

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the appointment of Yetunde Oni as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Bank of Nigeria.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced the appointment of Yetunde Oni as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Bank of Nigeria. This decision follows the dissolution of the boards and managements of Union Bank of Nigeria, Keystone Bank, and Polaris Bank by CBN Governor Dr. Yemi Cardoso. The removal of the banks' leaders was attributed to alleged corporate governance infractions and non-compliance with regulatory requirements. Yetunde Oni's appointment as CEO of Union Bank was disclosed in a statement by the CBN's acting Director of Corporate Communications, Sidi Hakama, and is effective immediately.

Yetunde Oni, the first female CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, will succeed Mudassir Amray as the CEO of Union Bank. Oni's professional journey includes graduating from the University of Ibadan with a degree in Economics in 1991, followed by executive training at Oxford University in 2016 and INSEAD Business School in 2017. She obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Bangor University, Wales, in 2020.

Oni's career began in 1994 at Ecobank Nigeria as a Relationship Manager in the Institutional Banking Group, where she worked until 2005. She then joined Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, initially as a Senior Account Relationship Manager in the Local Corporations segment. Subsequently, she assumed the role of Wholesale Banking Branch Head at the Apapa Branch and was responsible for developing the bank's Local Corporate portfolio in the Apapa and Ogun State Region. In May 2010, she was appointed Head of Local Corporates. From 2014 to January 2021, Oni served as the Managing Director Country Head of Commercial Banking in West Africa for Standard Chartered Bank.

Before her current appointment as CEO of Union Bank, Yetunde Oni held the position of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone, a role she assumed in January 2021.
