EFCC EXPANDS PROBE INTO ALLEGED MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expanded its investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expanded its investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Key officials, including directors, have been summoned by the anti-graft agency to meet with the suspended Minister, Dr. Betta Edu, and the suspended Coordinator of the National Social Intervention Programme, Halima Shehu, as well as top bank officials involved in the movement of substantial cash without proper financial reporting protocols.

According to a reliable source, the summoning of the directors is aimed at establishing their roles in the ongoing investigation, which has revealed a significant collaboration between banks and ministry officials in the unauthorized movement of funds. The summoned directors were questioned about their involvement in the matter and were required to provide statements before being allowed to leave.

The EFCC has made it clear that it is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring fairness in its decision-making process. The agency has vowed not to allow anyone involved in corrupt practices to evade justice, regardless of their influence.

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, was not present at the EFCC on the specified day but is expected to appear before the agency alongside other officials at a later date. Meanwhile, the suspended Minister, Betta Edu, who had previously appeared before the EFCC, returned to provide further information in response to the agency's inquiries.

Betta Edu has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the alleged transfer of N585 million into a private account for disbursement to vulnerable groups in certain states. However, the Accountant General of the Federation holds a different view. This disagreement led to Edu's suspension and subsequent appearance before the EFCC.

The exact amount of money involved in the alleged misappropriation has been a subject of speculation, with conflicting reports about the sums attributed to Sadiya and Halima. Both individuals have denied any wrongdoing in the matter.
