TRAFFIC WOES IN LAGOS AS THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE REPAIR BEGINS

The commencement of an eight-week repair project on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has resulted in significant traffic congestion for motorists and commuters.

Yesterday, motorists and commuters in Lagos experienced significant traffic congestion as the Federal Government's eight-week repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge entered its second day. The repair works, which began on Tuesday, led to a mild gridlock in the area.

The traffic situation was exacerbated by the diversion of traffic along the Iyana-Oworonshoki inward Adeniji Adele section of the Third Mainland Bridge, as well as the closure of a section to vehicular movement. Early in the morning, heavy traffic was observed on alternative routes for motorists heading to the Mainland, particularly along Funsho Williams Avenue, formerly known as Western Avenue. Later in the day, the traffic trend shifted to the other side, heading inward Island, due to a high influx of vehicles along that axis.

Motorists expressed their frustration with the situation and called on both the federal and state governments to implement more effective traffic management strategies to alleviate the congestion. Some individuals, such as Rafiu Adebayo and Mrs. Stella Abioye, shared their experiences of spending several hours in traffic, highlighting the need for improved traffic management plans.

During a monitoring exercise at the diversion point, the Commissioner for Transportation in Lagos State, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that 250 traffic management personnel had been deployed to the area to minimize inconvenience and ensure smooth movement for motorists. Osiyemi also mentioned that the Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigerian Police Force were collaborating to ensure safety, security, and order during the repair period.

It was noted that the Adeniji bound lane would be open to traffic from midnight to noon, after which it would be closed to vehicular movement. Motorists heading inbound Island would be diverted to Eko Bridge via Ikorodu Road. These measures were put in place to manage the traffic flow during the repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge.
