The Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House made a significant announcement yesterday, presenting Prince Abdul Onikoyi as its candidate for the position of Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Imobaland. The Secretary of the Dosunmu Onikoyi Ruling House, Prince Ademola, formally introduced Prince Abdul Onikoyi as the family’s choice for the next Oba at the Family House, Enuowa, Idumota, Lagos Island.

According to Ajas Onikoyi, Ganiu Onikoyi was elected after polling six of the eight available votes among the eight family lineages for the preferred candidate. The family secretary provided details on the selection process, stating that the heads of each of the eight lineages formed the elders forum and were responsible for disseminating information to their respective lineage members.

The election of the family’s choice was scheduled for December 23, 2023. The Fagbemi Ayanmi lineages concluded their voting, with four of them voting for Ganiu Onikoyi, while one vote was undetermined. Due to the absence of two heads of lineages from the Agneti branch and one head from another, the voting process was rescheduled for December 30, 2023, to allow the Agbetis to exercise their rights.

On December 30, 2023, the two heads of lineages from the Agbetis present concluded by giving their votes to Ganiu Onikoyi. Consequently, Ganiu Onikoyi scored six out of the eight possible votes from the eight lineages and was unanimously elected as the next Oba of Onikoyi and Moba lands from the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House.

Following his announcement, Prince Ganiyu Onikoyi promised to unite the family, acknowledging that division has hindered individual and collective development. He expressed his gratitude for being selected as the Oba-elect of the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House and emphasized the significance of the moment, expressing appreciation to God and honoring the efforts of their ancestors.
