"Brazil Mourns the Passing of Football Legend Mario Zagallo"

Introduction

The passing of Mario Zagallo, a revered figure in Brazilian football, has prompted a national outpouring of grief and tributes.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced three days of national mourning in Brazil for the passing of four-time World Cup-winning football legend Mario Zagallo, who died at the age of 92. Zagallo, known as the "Old Wolf," was a key figure in Brazilian football, having played alongside Pele in Brazil’s 1958 and 1962 World Cup-winning teams and later coaching the 1970 World Cup-winning side. He passed away from multiple organ failure after being treated for health issues at the Barra D’Or hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

Lula and many others paid tribute to Zagallo, acknowledging his significant contributions to football. FIFA chief Gianni Infantino described Zagallo as a "tactical genius" and emphasized his influence on Brazilian football. Messages of condolence also poured in from current and former players, as well as football clubs across Brazil.

Zagallo's public wake will be held at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) headquarters in Rio, followed by a burial at the Sao Joao Batista cemetery. His passing comes at a challenging time for Brazilian football, which is still mourning the loss of Pele and facing difficulties in the national team's performance and coaching leadership.
