Security Expert Advocates for Liberalization of Firearms in Nigeria

Security expert Mike Ejiofor has made a case for the legalization of firearms and the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

Security expert and President of the Alumni Association of the National Institute of Security Studies, Mike Ejiofor, has stated that legalizing the carrying of firearms and weapons for Nigerians will not lead to anarchy in the country. In an interview with Arise Television, he emphasized that due to the inadequate security situation in the country, the government should encourage citizens to defend themselves. Ejiofor expressed his long-standing position on the need to liberalize the carrying of arms for Nigerians, citing the ongoing violence in states like Benue and Plateau as a reason to consider this approach.

In response to the Chief of Army Staff's statement that Nigeria would become a state of anarchy if citizens were allowed to bear arms, Ejiofor argued that the country was already in a state of anarchy. He highlighted the prevalence of illegal arms in the hands of civilians and attributed ongoing massacres to the political elites who possess these illegal arms, which they use during elections and retain afterward. Ejiofor stressed the need for regulations to certify individuals who can bear arms, emphasizing the importance of mental examination and temperament assessment.

Ejiofor also advocated for the establishment of state police, addressing concerns about potential abuse by pointing out that the Nigerian Police Force is already facing abuse. He expressed worry about the lack of manpower in the police force and the allocation of officers to protect VIPs rather than bolstering national security. Ejiofor called for a reevaluation of security priorities, urging the withdrawal of police protection from non-essential individuals and redirecting resources to address the country's security challenges.
