EFCC Clarifies Former Minister's Invitation and Updates on Misappropriated Funds Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, did not disregard its invitation, contrary to reports in some sections of the media.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, did not disregard its invitation, contrary to reports in some sections of the media. According to EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the former minister sent a letter explaining that she was unable to attend the invitation due to health challenges.

Oyewale emphasized that Umar-Farouq did not ignore the EFCC's invitation and provided valid reasons for her absence. He noted that her lawyer also briefed the anti-graft agency on the reasons for her non-appearance. The EFCC has acknowledged her plea and expects her to honor the invitation without further delay. Oyewale also mentioned that there might not be a reason for her arrest as she has taken the necessary steps through her lawyer.

Regarding the alleged misappropriated funds, Oyewale stated that the reported figure of N37.1 billion may not be accurate, as the EFCC is still in the process of tracing all relevant transactions. He indicated that the actual amount involved in the misappropriation could potentially exceed the currently publicized figure, but the EFCC will refrain from confirming any specific amount until their investigation is complete.

In a related development, the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu, who was arrested on Tuesday, has been released. She has been directed to report to the EFCC office for questioning until the conclusion of the investigation.
