Nigeria has witnessed the rise of prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters who have achieved remarkable success across various categories. Renowned figures like Israel Adesanya and Usman Kamaru have secured laurels for themselves in the UFC. However, beyond these two well-known names, other Nigerians are also making a significant impact in the UFC, with fighters like Sodiq Yusuff, Kennedy Nzechukwu, and Hakeem Dawodu showcasing their prowess.

In a notable turn of events, Mixed Martial Arts has now found its roots in Nigeria. The Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMAF) has received official recognition from both the Ministry of Sports Development and the Nigeria Olympic Committee. This recognition marks a pivotal moment for the sport's development in the country.

During the NMMAF's inaugural national championship held in Lagos, Ambassador Henry George, the President of NMMAF, expressed his delight. He highlighted that the government's acknowledgment of the sport grants them a platform to elevate it to new heights. George exuded confidence in the potential of MMA, envisioning it as a sport that can reach global prominence. He emphasized that many of the fighters are transitioning from other martial arts disciplines such as boxing, taekwondo, and karate. With guided training and development, these fighters are expected to ascend the ranks and achieve international success.

Looking forward, Nigeria is gearing up to participate in an African championship scheduled for September. This event will serve as qualifiers for the Olympics. Ambassador Henry George remains optimistic that Nigerian athletes will deliver exceptional performances that make the nation proud.

Israel Inwang, the secretary of the federation, acknowledged that while the federation's recognition is recent, Nigeria is fully prepared to take on the challenges posed by other African nations. The upcoming African Mixed Martial Arts Championships in Angola this September will be a testament to Nigeria's capabilities. Inwang assured that the country is sending its best athletes to compete, giving Nigeria strong prospects in the tournament.
