A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has raised concerns about the appointment of former state party chairman, Donatus Nwakpa, as the National Welfare Secretary. The faction, known as Abia APC Caucus and Stakeholders, issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with Nwakpa's emergence, stating that he was not the preferred choice of party supporters in the state.

This agitation comes shortly after the Abia APC rejected what they termed an 'illegal imposition by the NWC' (National Working Committee), emphasizing the importance of adhering to the party's constitution.

Nwakpa's selection has triggered controversy within Abia, particularly following the induction of six new zonal officers into the APC NWC. Nwakpa was among the six new national officers introduced by the National Secretary of the party, Senator Ajibola Basiru.

The statement, signed by Senator Chris Adighije, representing the Abia stakeholders, conveyed their sentiments, indicating that their stance reflected the feelings of party supporters in the state. They stressed the need for the NWC to reconsider their decision, considering that key state figures were not consulted during the selection process.

In response, another faction of the Abia APC, aligned with former Minister Uche Ogah, voiced support for Nwakpa's appointment as the National Welfare Secretary. This faction, represented by Publicity Secretary Offor Okorie, dismissed media reports claiming that the state party had rejected Nwakpa's election. They asserted that certain elements were behind this alleged rejection, aiming to create disunity within the state party.

Okorie emphasized that Nwakpa's election was constitutionally conducted and embraced by genuine party members in the state. He contended that those opposing Nwakpa's appointment lacked the capacity to secure election victories and were attempting to obstruct progress within Abia APC.
