Nigerian investigative journalist Umar Audu expressed concerns about his safety following his recent investigative report uncovering a fake results syndicate in Togo and Benin Republic. The journalist, who works for the Daily Nigeria newspaper, revealed that he obtained a degree within six weeks of admission into one of the universities and served as a corps member in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) using the obtained certificate.

In an interview with Channels Television, Umar Audu expressed worry about the lack of confidence in Nigeria's security system for journalists to carry out their work without fear of victimization. Although he mentioned that he had not received any direct threats, he stated that he is currently keeping a low profile to prioritize his safety, as friends and family have expressed genuine concern.

Umar emphasized the need for journalists to be able to conduct their work peacefully and be assured of their safety, calling on the authorities to ensure his protection. He also highlighted the societal challenges where journalists face threats and intimidation, emphasizing the importance of a safe working environment for journalists.

Regarding the cost of acquiring the fake certificate, Umar disclosed that he spent approximately N600,000. He clarified that he did not physically travel to the border but instead paid an Immigration officer to assist in obtaining an ECOWAS passport and a backdated stamp of Nigerian Immigration and Benin, for which he paid N150,000.
